BMI is one of the most widely recognized measures of body size and is still commonly used in health, fitness and medical settings—but how much does it actually tell us about an individual's health? This workshop explores the surprising history of the Body Mass Index, from its origins as a population-level statistical tool in the 1800s to its eventual adoption by insurance companies, medicine and public health. You'll examine how BMI came to be used as an indicator of health despite never being designed to assess an individual's body composition or overall health status. You'll explore the limitations of BMI, including its inability to distinguish between muscle, fat and bone mass, differences across individuals and populations, and how BMI classifications have changed over time. The workshop also examines the relationship between body size and health, weight stigma and assumptions surrounding body weight. By understanding BMI's history and limitations, you'll be better prepared to interpret BMI in context rather than relying on a single number and help clients develop a broader understanding of health and well-being.You will receive a PDF presentation and short quiz to complete and email to info@inshapetraining.net in order to receive your CFES continuing education credits.Date & Time: Always AvailableCECs: 2 CFES Credits
